Hanover: leading convention city
Site of the first world exhibition in Germany (Expo 2000), Hanover is one of Germany's foremost convention cities: CeBIT and the Hanover Messe are the largest computer and industry trade fairs in the world.
The cityscape suffered greatly from the ravages of the Second World War and the building speculation of more recent times, leaving very few significant architectural monuments. Only a few buildings representative of the various epochs of past centuries remain (brick gothic, renaissance, baroque, neo-gothic). These include the Marktkirche and the Alte Rathaus. There are interesting street art ensembles, especially the Sculpture Mile with the Nanas by Niki de Saint-Phalle.
Hanover today is first and foremost an important centre of industry and administration.
There are a number of colleges and research institutes.
Culture vultures can visit various museums, galleries and theatres.
Hanover has many green spaces in which to relax, most importantly the Stadtwald besides the various parks. Foremost amongst these are the Herrenhäuser Gardens with their baroque landscaping.
