Wuppertal - A big city with a green heart
Wuppertal's emblem, the world-famous suspension monorail that winds through the river valley of the Wupper, is also one of its main arteries. Wuppertal is a symbiosis of city, countryside and river. Surrounded by wooded mountains, the city lies lengthwise in the narrow valley of the Wupper. The outskirts of town are soon lost in the hilly meadows and large forests of the Bergische Land. Even within its sea of houses, you are never very far from pleasant green areas.
The city landscape is marked by richly adorned stucco fasades, traditional half-timbered houses, the narrow lanes of the old quarter and extensive shopping districts. From every point in the city, you can reach forest and vast expanses of green spaces within just a few minutes. Steep steps connect the lively city centre with the highly elegant and comfortable residential areas. A total of 8,723 steps, both up and down, must be climbed to go from one end to the other.
Other than highlights such as one of the most charming landscaped zoos in Europe, the Pina Bausch Dance Theatre (Tanztheater) and the Von der Heydt Art Museum, you may be tempted by the minor arts scene or an excursion into the green Bergische Land, where the famous Bergische afternoon coffee spread (Kaffeetafel) is served.
Despite a past dominated exclusively by textiles refinement and metal processing, Wuppertal is now home to international market leaders from fields as varied as the automotive components, medical technology and household appliance industries.
You can be sure of a warm welcome in Wuppertal and its surrounding area!
